The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has ordered the 15-day suspension of Geo News’ transmission, citing concerns over content aired during the channel’s special Muharram transmission. The regulator said the broadcast included religious visual representations that could hurt public sentiments and negatively affect religious harmony.
According to the regulator, the action was taken after reviewing a segment from Geo News’ special Muharram program titled “Safar-e-Ishq.” PEMRA stated that the visual content broadcast during the program raised serious regulatory concerns because of its potential impact on viewers and the country’s sensitive religious environment.
Transmission Suspended With Immediate Effect
Under the latest order, the broadcast license of Independent Media Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd., which operates Geo News, has been suspended for 15 days with immediate effect. The suspension applies to satellite transmission as well as all licensed cable and distribution platforms across Pakistan.
PEMRA has also instructed all distribution network operators to implement the order immediately and ensure that the channel remains off-air during the suspension period.
Council of Complaints to Review the Case
Besides suspending the transmission, the regulator has referred the matter to its Council of Complaints for further examination. The council will review the case in detail and may recommend additional regulatory action if required after completing its proceedings.
The authority said the review will focus on whether further measures are necessary under the country’s electronic media regulations.
Geo News Directed to Conduct Internal Inquiry
PEMRA has also directed Geo News management to launch an internal investigation into the editorial and compliance process that resulted in the broadcast of the disputed content.
The channel has been instructed to submit a detailed report to the Council of Complaints, explaining how the incident occurred, what corrective measures have been taken, and what preventive steps will be introduced to avoid similar situations in the future.
Religious Content Remains a Sensitive Regulatory Matter
Religious programming continues to receive close scrutiny in Pakistan due to its potential impact on public sentiment and social harmony. Media broadcasters are expected to follow PEMRA’s code of conduct while airing religious content, particularly during significant occasions such as Muharram.
